For content that is either outside the screen's viewport or for data sources not opened at all, our second method shows off-screen indicators and an on-demand smart preview. Our first method generates awareness for occluded or out-of-viewport content using see-through visualization. To remedy this situation, we introduce two novel visualization methods to guide users to hidden content. Current software, however, only provides limited support to visualize hidden occurrences and rarely supports search synchronization crossing application boundaries. In search tasks, the efficient retrieval of sought content is important. The entire compositing system is implemented in a custom widget toolkit named sprint (in C++ with OpengGL and shaders) that is publicly available.Ĭontent on computer screens is often inaccessible to users because it is hidden, e.g., occluded by other windows, outside the viewport, or overlooked. Secondly, to facilitate focus control in such geometric spaces, a cascaded pointing translation process is implemented, enabling geometric mapping of pointing events across nested window managers. Firstly, the compositing process is turned to a rendering pipeline with window managers directly in-the-loop, with an imaging model combining diverse geometries.

To allow such nesting two extensions are introduced. Two distinct managers are implemented, 2d desktop and custom 3d book, that can be freely combined into nested hierarchies. In this context, a compositing system is presented, enabling the concurrent presence of multiple window managers, being arbitrarily nested while facilitating switch managers on-the-fly.

It applies off-screen drawing of managed windows with final image composition by the window manager itself. The benefits for the users are illustrated by an application in the context of climate impact research.Ĭompositing is currently the prevalent rendering paradigm for window managers. Our system includes methods to dynamically generate visualization views, to suggest suitable layouts of the views, and to enable interactive fine-tuning to accommodate the dynamically changing needs of the user (e.g., access to details on demand). We describe the mechanisms needed to show multiple visualization views on multiple displays and to interact with the views across device boundaries. We develop a visualization infrastructure for a novel kind of visualization environment labeled smart meeting room, which provides plenty of display space to present the visual information to be discussed. In this paper, we focus on the presentation and discussion of visualization results among domain experts, rather than on the generation of visual representations by visualization experts. Current visualization research mainly focuses on exploratory or confirmatory visualization taking place in classic workplace settings. Visualization has become an accepted tool to support the process of gaining insight into data. Our results indicate that our model was able to predict relevant open windows with high accuracy and participants felt that integrating visual prominence into the desktop environment reduces clutter and distraction, which results in reduced window switching and an increase in focus. Based on the results, we developed a prototype to dim irrelevant windows and reduce distractions, and evaluated it in a user study. To support developers in staying focused, we conducted a formative study with 18 professionals in which we examined their computer based and eye-gaze interaction with the window environment and devised a relevance model of open windows. Given the high fragmentation and complexity of their work, staying focused on the relevant pieces of information can become quite challenging in today’s windowbased environments, especially with the ever increasing monitor screen-size.
